Description

Here's the book you need to prepare for the latest version of CompTIA's IT Project+ exam. This Study Guide was developed to meet the exacting requirements of today's certification candidates. In addition to the consistent and accessible instructional approach that has earned Sybex the "Best Study Guide" designation in the 2003 CertCities Readers Choice Awards, this book provides:
  • Clear and concise information on IT project management
  • Practical examples and insights drawn from real-world experience
  • Leading-edge exam preparation software, including a test engine and electronic flashcards

You'll also find authoritative coverage of key exam topics, including:

  • IT Project Initiation and Scope Definition
  • IT Project Planning
  • IT Project Execution, Control and Coordination
  • IT Project Closure, Acceptance and Support

This book has been reviewed and approved as CompTIA Authorized Quality Curriculum (CAQC). Students derive a number of important study advantages with CAQC materials, including coverage of all exam objectives, implementation of important instructional design principles, and instructional reviews that help students assess their learning comprehension and readiness for the exam.

Note: On August 10, 2004 CompTIA changed the name of the IT Project+ certification to Project+, "in order to better reflect the title's application beyond IT professionals." Neither the exam objectives nor the exam questions were changed. The CAQC appoved content found in this edition of the IT Project+ Study Guide therefore remains valid and suitable for candidates preparing for the Project+ certification.

Note:CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.

4concise and clear  Jun 22, 2004
After reading the reviews of the first edition, I was somewhat skeptical about buying this book. However, since there is no other study guide available for the IT Project + (2003 Objectives), I decided to give it a shot.

This book is very well written. It is inline with the CompTIA updated objectives, and has loads of practice questions. After every chapter, you will find 20 multiple choice questions (along with their explanations). The companion CD has addition 120 drills, with explanations. The best feature is that the difficulty level of these questions is inline with the actual test questions (add 5 to 10% variance).

The only reason I am giving this book a four star is because of the typos. Although, the typos are not that misleading that you will end up learning a concept incorrectly, I believe the authors should have exercised a better quality control plan during the execution/controlling phase. Whoa. Do I sound like IT Project+ certified or what?

I passed the test. The only other material I used was the cram session study guide. It is written for the older version of the exam though. Why did I bother reading that guide? Because, at that point, this book was not available in the stores. If you have a good understanding of PM, and if you solve all the 350 multiple-choice questions that comes with this book (and the CD), the actual test will not be as hard, as most people think it is.

2Not a great study guide, but good enough to help pass  Jun 04, 2002
This book could have gone through another iteration during its planning phase. The author seems to be trying to do two different things: 1) Teach good project management and 2) create a study guide for the CompTIA IT Project+ certification. As anyone knows when you try to serve two audiences you ultimately serve neither.

As far as a PM book goes, this is so-so. You will not know how to run a project from this book as the author glosses over major topics and muddles topics together to make everything fit into the objectives of the exam which makes it very hard to follow at times and you will find yourself jumping back and forth in the book. There are also too few examples to drive home the process.

As a study guide, well there is a fairly decent CD full of questions that will help you memorize concepts and terms. I found the questions to be a little easier than they should be and did not cover everything that is covered on the exam. More importantly, the terminology in the test does not match the terminology in the book! However, with some study, some experience, and this book you should be able to pass the IT Project+ test.

3Lackluster  May 03, 2002 By Mark M. Payne
I found the the book verbose, not clear or concise and difficult to structure for studying. The editor should have held him to no more than 350 pages. You come away from a chapter having to circle back and write your own summaries because the author 1) Did not provide you with topical summaries that actually summarize what he talked about - he just states that he talked about them. 2) Did not structure the chapter such that he fully completes one topic before moving on to another. Lastly I found many of his examples to be excessive in quantity and overly simplistic in content.

1By far the worst book I had ever seen...  Aug 28, 2002 By Erin Smith
I read alot of technical and managemnt books, However this book is by far the worst I have ever....ever...seen. The book does not focus on the test objectives very well at all. The author writes "I have...." "I will..." "I....". Just really really bad.

I find that the point of the section head is not made or address very well at all. I'm so disappointed!

It seems to me that Sybex must be requiring their authors to create fluff to make the books so thick. This is just a book on BS. About the only plus is the testing engine is a good quiz tool assuming the questions follow to book closely. If another product come on the market, all things being equal.....buy it...site unseen......buy it....how could it be any worse?

3Worked for me  Apr 16, 2006 By William F. Clancy
Well organized, and seemed to follow the comptia objectives. I stomped the exam in 20 minutes after only one read! Usually I require several passes through a book before I feel strong enough to test. (I read through the "Official guide to the CISSP" seven, yes seven times before I tested.)

My only complaint was the CD...It wouldn't run under Adobe Acrobat ver 7 at home or at work. It came bundled with ver 5 (I think). I just wasn't about to uninstall what I had and install another just to run this CD.

I bought mine used here at Amazon for $20.00

All in all it works. 362 pages of information, and no surprises on the test.
