From the supplier: The privatization of infrastructure in East Asian countries has progressed slowly because of government reluctance to relinquish control. Private investment in infrastructure in the region, excluding Japan, accounts for only between 12% to 18% of total investment, compared to 50% in Chile and at least 70% in Argentina and Hungary. Attempts to privatize infrastructure have been hindered by governments that are reluctant to relinquish control. East Asian governments need to liberalize the infrastructure sector and promote competition, while creating new strategic roles for themselves. They must disengage from direct or contingent financing of projects, and create a transparent regulatory environment that reaffirms the government's commitment to privatization.
